Conferences______________________________________________________________

It’s that time of year again as
people start to book onto the NHF’s
Finance Conference. After last year’s
provocative sessions, Bill has been invited
back again to prick some of the common
held views around business assurance and
mergers.
He’ll be running a workshop with
Sally Hunter from Aspire Housing, entitled ‘Business
assurance – pricey or priceless?’.
After the recent fraud at Lambeth, all
Finance Directors will be considering the
real value of business assurance in their
organisations.
The other session is entitled ‘To
merge or not to merge – that is the
question?’ with David Mullins of
the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies.
This develops the research that David carried
out (see below for details under Publications)
and offers practical tips. Bill will be
looking at specific case studies that he’s
been involved with and he’ll be trying
not to come up with too many Shakespearean
quotes….’Now is the winter
of our discontent’….
Training___________________________________________________________________
Bill
has just completed a workshop on ‘Supporting
People Continuing Risks’ for the
HAIAF. His hands-on experience of this
complex area over the past 12 months has
given him an useful insight into this complex
area. Organisations continue to struggle
with this area, particularly in relation
to risks and controls. Bill is able to
provide training and consultancy advice
in this area.
Risk management continues to be a popular
topic and Bill has been involved in working
with Audit Committees and Boards to develop
the processes that already existed in their
organisations and make them more streamlined
and focused on assurance. Training courses
remain popular on this subject as new Board
Members get to grips with the issues.

Publications_______________________________________________________________
In 2005 the NHF engaged the University
of Birmingham to carry out some research,
which has recently been published as ‘Mergers & Alliances
in the Housing Association Sector – Testing
the Climate’. If the title may not
be the snappiest, the contents are a must
for all Chief Executives. Bill was fortunate
to be included as one of the expert interviewees.
His recent experiences, both as a consultant
and formerly with various firms, has given
him an useful insight into the complex
world of mergers and group structures within
housing associations.
Bill’s particular knowledge of smaller
RSLs, has resulted in him being invited
to present a session with David Mullins,
the author of the research, at the NHF
Finance Conference (more details above).
